Iphone4 for verizon with no 3g?

my friend gave me his iphone 4 like literally and i was wondering if i can just call verizon and say i broke my old phone so i can give them the serial number on the iphone and they can switch my info and **** to the iphone.... but will they tell me i need to get 3g or what?
